Hi Nick, thanks for taking the time to talk to us, tell me a little about yourself and how your love of eyewear started?

Hey thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk about my addiction. I’m a twenty one year old art history student from the Netherlands and I started collecting about three years ago. It started with me trying to find a good pair of sunglasses and this takes time. I’m very picky about the things I own, wear and collect and most of the time I try to find objects or clothes that you don’t normally see on the street. I love that I have something different, although I don’t want that difference to stand out. So I was browsing along internet to find all kind of models of glasses, and I came across the Carrera brand. Carrera wasn’t that big with their model range as they now are, but I liked what they had and browsed an local online marketplace. I found a brown pair of Carrera, contacted the seller and made an appointment to pick them up. Three days later I was in Amsterdam to meet the lady and to buy the glasses. Once I was home I looked at them, and they seemed not the same as I had seen on the Carrera website, so I googled the model number on the inside of the temple ‘5593’. There it seemed I bought an Carrera from the 80’s and the website I was being brought too had hundreds of other sunglasses, also from earlier periods, which all looked amazing. 

I started to search for the brand names in my local marketplace and came across a lot of different vintage glasses, I bought a few which I liked and there my start in the vintage eyewear scene started. I started to educate myself through all the vintage websites and blogs I could find on the internet and started to collect all kinds of frames.

The 5593 is a great frame, interchangeable lenses and a classic aviator design, i love this model. So your obsession began with the Carrera frame and this opened up a whole world of vintage digging. I know you have a love of Cazal, tell me which models are your favourites and what do you think about the re-issues? 

The 900s series is my favourite Cazal series. The slick metal frames, with nice details on a lot of frames which make them stand out from normal vintage shapes. My favourite model out of the series is the 951. I have had four colorways, I now have three left. I traded my black one, because it had no temples and I needed to wear it with the sportstrap, which I didn’t liked a lot.  The best part of the 951 in my eyes are the temples, they are really sturdy and come in a lot of colors! Also the frames diversity in colorways and material (the lizard or snakeskin on them is amazing) is a huge plus. I’m still searching for some of the rarer colorways of that model, ivory and the bi-color which fellow collector Troy Loferski has. I’m very happy with the red/black w. germany model I have out of the series, that is also a more rare color, although it has been reissued recently by the Vintage Frames Company. The other models in the 900 series are amazing too but I only like them in certain colorways. Blue for the 901, brown for the 902, darkblue for the 903, green for the 905 and the bordeaux red 908. Finding the specific colorways is always hard, but even harder with a model out of an different series which I like. That is the 800 series 867, I have had the frame in black and purple colorway but I am really looking for the clear ones. I even like the 867 better than the 858 and 856s but that might be because they have been reissued. 

The reissuing really spoils the hunting for me, I do not like it that other people can with ease find what I have searched for for such a long time. The only exception I can make is for the other colorways which were released in collaboration with Dita and Ti$a. This makes an addition to the collection of real collectors and still makes the model available to the larger audience. I understand that having a company means that you need to make revenue but I hope Cazal will rejuvenate there design time and come up with new models, which will be legendary like their ancestors.  

I have to agree on the re-issues, as a collector it is the hunting and the rarity thats make certain models so special. I guess that as with most things when something from the past becomes popular again, when there is demand then it is only natural to supply that demand. One possible way around this issue would be to make the re-issues in alternate colourways or to try and improve on the originals in some ways rather than just remake them. Still it is great for people who are new to Cazal to be able to buy what are amazing designs. If you were to recommend another vintage brand what would it be and are there any new eyewear ranges that you like?

Other brands I would recommend are Alpina, Cartier and Boeing. Alpina is another legendary brand with bold designs. I really like the Alpina M1 in the large 64 size. I own one in the all black colorway and I am still searching for a black one with the rainbow color trim.(I missed out on one lately) The other models they had TR3 , TR4 and the Quattro series are also very nice, but don’t seem to fit me well. The second brand I mentioned Cartier is I think well know to everyone in the world. Maybe not for its frames, but at least for the brandname as a maker of luxury goods. The different version of pilot like models, Santos, Vendome and China lacquer are very nice and not easy to get. I have owned multiple sizes of Santos and Vendome, but the model I wanted to have for my collection, the lacquer one seemed to be not reachable. I got scammed on buying a nice lacquer pair and haven’t seen one since. The third brand I like is Boeing, high quality models in not too bold designs. Especially the 5701 and the 5708 are nice. The 5708 I recently acquired and its fits like a glove.

In the new eyewear range there are some okay brands. I like Ralph Vaessen. He makes high quality horn frames, the material is amazing and a lot of the designs attract me. I hope I can buy a pair in the near future.

Next to Ralph I like the things the Japanese based Solakzade is making. Its an company selling vintage frames. Next to that they make custom Cazal’s and haute couture like glasses for fashion shows.

Hi Teerabul, thanks for taking the time to talk to us about your eyewear collection. Please tell us a little about yourself and when you started collecting eyewear?

I am a freelancer working in fashion and design, previous works include, as a design consultant for adidas Originals, Maharishi, as a pattern cutter for Marjan Perjoski, Vivienne Westwood gold label, Holly Fulton. You can find out more about Teerabul's work here Teerabul.com

I presume, like most collectors, I am a bit of a hoarder. After a few years of accumulating all sorts of stuff, I noticed that there were few pairs of nice sunglasses in my cupboard so I started to watch out for them and bit by bit the numbers have grown.

I normally accumulate those quirky in design, unusual in style or bright colour frames. I suppose having grown up in the 80s, I remembered seeing the iconic Picasso frame from Alain Mikli and thought I'd love to have one of those (which now I do). Naturally, I now collect Alain Mikli and also the other quirky 60s favourite, Oliver Goldsmith. I do wear the majority of my collection, they are taking their turn coming out of the dark glass cupboard into the sunlight.

Most of the frames I collect are acetate/plastic base! I love my sunglasses big, chunky and heavy like those of vintage Oliver Goldsmith (a whole chunk of strong plastic). Wire frame has never done it for me, though I must say I also do collect old wired frames but mostly antique ones, like those Edwardian spectacles or those 20s rimless frame.

Please tell us a little more about the earlier frames, its not something I know much about? Also I can see you have an eye for extravagant designs, are there any eyewear designers you like today?

I have never had a problem with my eyesight but always found myself wearing glasses since I was a teenager back home in Thailand. When I came over 20 years ago, the habit continued and frequently I bought wearable frames as well as old vintage condition ones from vintage markets and car boots (though now I try to limit what I buy, just to make sure that I really like them, space is an issue here).

I've always liked 60s type sort of frame, those original big 60s NHS type, I used to wear them before I’ve changed my preoccupation to Alain Mikli and a bit more daring design. I've also been though those phases when I just bought anything 50s, those typical cats eyes style, both with clear lens with a sunshade clip on or a straightforward sunglasses glass lens. I also like the old fashioned wire frame, though most of them are not in everyday usable condition, but I do keep them because I love the simplicity of their design and some of them even have an extra function (like bendable nose bridge to keep it held up to the nose of the wearer).

I do not follow much about the new sunglasses designers, though I do love the work of ‘THEO EYEWEAR’ I think they are fresh, modern and have their own distinctive style.

I agree Theo are a great contemporary brand that is making more interesting designs, this is a model from their collaboration with Tim Van Steenbergen. Mykita 8 Years

Whilst visiting the Silmo optical fair in Paris this last weekend i was lucky enough to be invited to the Mykita party to celebrate the launch of their '8' book. It was a great night with entertainment provided by a guy( i missed his name) who mixed up live beatboxing whilst playing the harmonica, dancing playing records and samplers/ keyboards. It was completely unique and perfectly complimented the whole Mykita night. On show were some of the special collaborations between the Berlin based company and the special designers and photographers they worked with. You can see a few pictures above, unfortunately i lost all my other images i took. At the bottom you can see a preview of a new model that is being produced from a new ground breaking material called Mylon. The possibilities for this material are endless.
